Budgeting is not magic—it’s just math! Too often we start a budgeting program or app thinking that having some piece of software will magically create and keep a budget for us. Maybe you already know this intuitively or learned from the ‘School of Hard Knocks’, but let me assure you from years of trying different apps, there is no magic involved. There is no Oz behind the curtain! It’s just you and your numbers.
No budgeting app will ever take the place of you. You need to be involved in the process. You need to be involved keeping it up-to-date. You need to be involved when there are changes to your income or bills, or the cost of groceries. There’s a thousand things that can flip our budget upside down in the twinkling of an eye. Budgeting is a mindset. Budgeting is less about numbers and more about how you approach those numbers. We all know people with piles of money who are miserable and other people with very little money who are happy and content. This tells us all we need to know—it’s not about the number of dollars as much as it’s our attitude towards those dollars. I think the allure of a budgeting app is that once we have it set up, it will do the work for us. It will take care of everything and we won’t have to do anything with our budget ever again—that’s a myth.
This brings us to the ultimate magician named Artificial Intelligence. If an app is appealing, in today’s world AI is like candy to a kid—nearly irresistible! It’s so tempting to think we’ll just connect AI to our bank and let it set up and manage our budget. I strongly caution you not to do this. Not because I want you to purchase and use our program, but because every financial advisor I’ve read or heard talking about AI is screaming, “Do not connect AI to your bank!” The risk is too high. Here’s the headline: “An OpenAI model escaped a confined testing environment.” Apparently, as the article indicates, “The model autonomously breached the developer platform during a cybersecurity evaluation. It bypassed its containment, connected to the open internet, and spent over four days orchestrating a multi-step cyberattack. According to reports, this rogue agent also accessed multiple external accounts and third-party infrastructure components during its operations before being contained.” Maybe there will come a day when we and our banks will be connected to AI, but it’s not today.
So, until we are in The Matrix, a budget should be a framework, a tool that helps you organize and manage your money. The key is that it helps YOU. There really is no magic, you still need to be in control of managing your money. And if sticking to a budget feels restricting like a diet, try 4 Bite Budget—we call it the un-app way to manage your money because we’re really operating with a mindset that says, I need to spend within my means, I need to save to be prepared, and I don’t wanna track everything. So, to accomplish this, we show you how to budget without tracking everything, by having your money in ‘buckets’ or categories that allow you to easily manage your money—like magic!
